THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BLOOD AND WATER FROM THE LORD'S PIERCED SIDE - EXPLAINED

'But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.' - John 19 vs 34

Hello dearly Beloved of GOD in CHRIST JESUS. I Trust GOD that you are gonna receive the understanding of this subject which I now explain to you. AMEN.

Okay. You might have thought what the blood and water that flowed out of the LORD'S side when HE was pierced means, you might have wondered what that meant, right? Okay, let's get to see what that happening means.

Firstly, let's look at it from the medical angle. Medically, it is said that the kind of beaten the LORD JESUS endured leads to hypovolemic shock. Hypovolemic shock is a state of low blood volume. Remember, the beating and bruises the LORD endured was so severe that HE relatively lost all HIS Blood in the process. An internet source has this to say concerning the bruises the LORD endured;

The Roman flogging or scourging that Jesus endured prior to being crucified normally consisted of 39 lashes, but could have been more (Mark 15:15; John 19:1). The whip that was used, called a flagrum, consisted of braided leather thongs with metal balls and pieces of sharp bone woven into or intertwined with the braids. The balls added weight to the whip, causing deep bruising as the victim was struck. The pieces of bone served to cut into the flesh. As the beating continued, the resulting cuts were so severe that the skeletal muscles, underlying veins, sinews, and bowels of victims were exposed. This beating was so severe that at times victims would not survive it in order to go on to be crucified.

Medically, the results of hypovolemic shock are;

  1. The heart will swiftly begin to pump blood seeing that blood is grossly absent from the body.
  2. The person would collapse or faint due to low blood pressure.
  3. The person would experience extreme thirst, as the body would desire to replenish lost body fluids.

These are a few effects of hypovolemic shock. The second (2) effect as seen above states that the person would collapse or faint due to low blood pressure. We saw that happened to the LORD JESUS as HE carried HIS cross to Calvary where HE would be crucified, HE collapsed and could not proceed any further, therefore another man was compelled to help the LORD carry HIS Cross. Let's look at it;

'And as they came out, they found a man of cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.' - Matthew 27 vs 32 {KJV}

You see that... It's evident that the LORD either fainted or collapsed due to the continuous beating HE endured from the Roman soldiers.

Medically it is said that fluids gather around the heart and around the lungs when there is a rapid heartbeat in a person who is low on blood volume. This gathering of fluid in the membrane around the heart is called "Pericardial Effusion", and the gathering of fluid around the lungs is called "Pleural Effusion". So medically, this is said to be the reason why Blood and Water came out of the side of JESUS when HE was pierced, because it is medically believed that the LORD was pierced through HIS Lungs and Heart. Hence, Blood and Water (fluid) came out from HIS side. Okay. This is science.

Now, let's take a look at the Spiritual signification of the flowing of water out of the pierced side of the LORD at HIS death on the cross.

'When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.' - John 18 vs 1 {KJV}

Now Brook speaks of a Stream. If you read that in some other translation, it puts it as the stream Kedron or Cedron, they mean the same thing.

Now see this. In the days of the Law, the old testament days, they offered up animal sacrifices unto GOD for the atonement of sins, and this sacrifice was done in the Temple. Now, by the side of the Temple was a stream, and this stream is what is called Cedron in the Hebrew tongue. Now this stream was where the blood and water which came from the Animals they sacrificed on the Altar of the Temple flowed into, the stream was by the side of the Temple, and there was a channel at the side of the Temple that connected the Temple Altar to the stream, Cedron. When Animal sacrifices were made, the blood and the water emanating from the sacrifice flowed through that channel into the stream or brook (the Brook Cedron).

Now, let’s see this;

'Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

But he spake of the temple of his body.' - John 2 vs 19 - 21 {KING JAMES VERSION}

Now from this passage we see that Jesus clearly revealed that HIS Body was a Temple, the New Covenant Temple. Put this at heart while we see this big one;

'But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.' - John 19 vs 33 – 34 {KING JAMES VERSION}

Can you sense something? It says that when the soldier pierced HIS side with a spear, right away, Blood and Water came out. Waow! This confirms to us that indeed Jesus body is indeed a Temple as HE declared to the Jews in figures of speech {John 2 vs 21}. Do you remember how that the Brook Cedron was located at the side of the temple? And Blood and Water from the temple sacrifices flowed into it? Likewise Jesus, our Temple and our Altar. Just as a channel was connected to the Altar by the side of the Temple, and the blood and water of their animal sacrifices flowed out by the side of the Altar, likewise JESUS's side. When He declared it was finished on the Cross, meaning, the sacrifice had been completely performed, just as the physical temples of the Jews, the blood and the water was let out from the Temple’s court through it's side into the Brook Cedron, signifying that the sacrifice was done, likewise Jesus, the Blood and the water of HIS perfect sacrifice for our redemption flowed through HIS side signifying to us that the sacrifice was done and completed, and all of our sins (past, present and any future sin) are washed away forever {Hebrews 10 vs 14}. O Hallelujah! I’m excited about this. O Glory to God.

See this;

'We have an altar - the cross where Christ was sacrificed - where those who continue to seek salvation by obeying Jewish laws can never be helped.' - Hebrews 13 vs 10 {KJV}

It clearly states that the Cross of CHRIST is our Altar.

So just as the blood and water of the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament flowed from the side of the Altar into the brook, indicating that the sacrifice which was carried out inside the temple is done, so did the Blood and Water which flowed from the side of the LORD JESUS CHRIST as HE hung on our Altar (HIS Cross) indicate that HIS sacrifice for the redemption and Salvation of man was done, finished and completed. For HE said, It is finished! That was a declaration of the completion of the Atonement for you and for me. Hallelujah! Glory to GOD.

So you see, the sacrifices of the Old Testament and the pattern for the sacrifices all pointed to the death of the CHRIST and the manner of HIS death. Little wonder the Epistle declares that CHRIST died according to the Scripture;

'For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures...' - 1 Corinthians 15 vs 3 {KJV}

In other words, HIS death was patterned according to the way and manner at which the Scriptures had declared and pointed concerning HIM. If you read the verse 4, we are informed that even HIS burial and resurrection on the third day was according to the Scriptures;

'And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures...' - {KJV}

You see that... So the sacrifice of CHRIST wasn't an accidental event, no! It was a patterned happening. Every event around HIS death, burial, and resurrection, was according to the pattern the Scriptures had already spoken of and symbolized in a shadow seen in the practices and activities of the Old Testament, of which we have just seen one of it, how from the side of the Temple, the blood and water of the animal sacrifices were channeled out of the temple, prophetically symbolizing how that blood and water would flow out of the side of the LORD at HIS death, indicating that the Sacrifice of redemption for man is finished. Hallelujah!

GOD is with you.
